Biography

Shelley Rissien began teaching Hebrew at the University of Kansas in 2005. She received her undergraduate degrees in Psychology & Social Work from the University of Maryland. After completing her Masters in Jewish Studies from the Laura and Alvin Siegal College of Judaic Studies, she served for five years as the Principal of Jewish Studies for Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy in Overland Park, Kansas. For 22 years and while serving as principal, she taught Biblical studies and Hebrew language as part of the Hyman Brand faculty. She was simultaneously the principal of Kehilath Israel Synagogue School in Overland Park, Kansas for 20 years.

She was recognized for her work with the Kansas City Jewish community and awarded Teacher of the Year eight times during her tenure. Morah Shelley believes that the study of the Hebrew language compels one to have a deeper understanding of human history and contemporary Jewish life.
